Travel Author Murielle Bollen

Travel Author Murielle Bollen has joined the JUzDIzRTS Author Event!

Murielle Bollen was born and raised in Belgium, Europe. About seven years ago her husband’s job brought their family across the ocean to beautiful Ontario, Canada. She is a Translator-Interpreter and lives with her husband, two sons and their dog in Newmarket, Ontario

In Canada, Murielle found time to let her creative self become more present and decided to try and realize her childhood dream of being a writer. She started writing her first book about two of her greatest passions: food and travel. Right in the middle of this project, in 2011, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Through yoga and meditation, she was able to reconnect with herself and her spirituality. Her belief in the healing power of our own body and in the energetic power of our being only deepened by this experience with cancer. Her love for life, for her family, and especially for herself reached a new level of purity and intensity. A new sense of awareness was awakened.

Murielle decided that nothing would hold her back from realizing her dreams anymore.

She is currently working on her next book, “Tasting Life Through and Beyond Cancer” and offers her readers a bi-weekly newsletter “Butterflies” – Little wings of advice to bring your daily life to new spiritual destinations.

Tasting Life Around the WordMurielle will be reading from her first book, “Tasting Life Around The World” which describes her blissful travels together with her husband and two sons. Her fascination and passion for good food and her desire to see different places, to meet new people and to be totally infused with life, spills from every page. She has always been eager to share her experiences with other people, to bring them beauty and adventure.

Tasting Life Around The World is an ode to life, a way of living in the moment every minute of every day. You will find recipes here, but even more so your own creativity will be awakened and stimulated. You will find travel suggestions in this book, but even more so you will be inspired to go and explore. You will be infused with the desire to try, see, taste, experience what Murielle is describing. This is a book for everyone who wants to live more intuitively, for everyone who wants to get a more intense taste of this beautiful life.

“Writing can be a lonely business, so I’m thrilled to be part of the JUzDIzRTS event, where I have the opportunity to connect with readers and fellow authors. The most thrilling part of being published is finally being able to share your work with others, and to hear their thoughts about the imaginary world you’ve created. Thank you for inviting me to be a part of the JUzDIzRTS community!”

Thriller Author Lawrence Segel

Thriller author Lawrence Segel has joined the JUzDIzRTS Author Event!

Dr. Segel is a freelance medical journalist with hundreds of articles published on such subjects ranging from medical humour, infamy and blunders, to the history of medicine, and medicine in literature.

He has published two novels: the 2012 New Age reincarnation thriller “Squaring the Circle” and a 2013 medical-legal drama, “Informed Consent.”

Dr. Segel lives in Aurora with his two dogs, and has a keen interest in various occult paths from both Western and Eastern traditions.

SquaringthecirclecoverDr. Lawrence Segel will be reading from “Squaring the Circle.”

Perhaps, the ultimate vengeance comes from the grave!
Squaring the Circle is a New Age thriller.  It is an atypical ghost story that addresses humankind’s darkest history, yet shines light on the possibility of finding redemption through alternative other-worldly forces.  Squaring the Circle may be an impossible mathematical equation, but this book offers answers that defy logic.
“This event is an excellent forum for writers to meet each other and develop an audience for their works.  Writing seems to be such a vicious circle of frustration.  No one wants to publish or read you unless you are already published and well known.  I’m sure this event will have many undiscovered talents present, but not so undiscovered once it is over.  Thank you for all your help.”

Travel Author & Poet Jim Scott

Travel author Jim Scott has joined the JUzDIzRTS Author Event!

Born in England, raised on the banks of a river in the Sussex countryside, Jim Scott from a young age developed strong spiritual connections with the natural realm. He wasn’t to understand this until much later in life when this realization explained the somewhat unique atavistic philosophies that evolved from his extensive travels and often ran against the grain of mainstream thinking.

Mostly working and often living in close proximity with nature he developed a profound respect for the balance of how life is lived according to the planet’s natural wisdom. This is represented in his writing where he is not shy to criticize what he considers the synthetic, artificial worlds of cities, industry and reliance upon financial success, while advocating environmental causes, bucolic lifestyles and indigenous groups who yet follow the Old Ways of natural balance. Such views, backed by extensive and diverse experience within many realms of human existence coupled with a keen interest in the written word created the perfect opportunity to express what he has seen and believes within his many fascinating stories, poems and essays. The list of countries to which Jim has wandered is long: Morocco, Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, Peru, Gibraltar, India, Antigua, South Africa, Portugal, and many, many more where his sojourns were lengthy enough for adventures to be lived and insightful philosophies developed from them. It is from such experiences among such disparate cultures, landscapes, politics and economies that the stories and verses in his books were forged.

A single father of three, Jim now lives in Canada and spends as much time as he can in the British Virgin Islands where two of his children were born and where, out of all the places to which he has wandered and in which he has sojourned, he
feels most at home.

jim-scott-bookJim has chosen two pieces for this event.  One is a very short and surprisingly true and amusing story written in a medium that is not often used for such from the soon to be published “On Tropical Islands and Sparkling Seas.”

This book is a continuance of the popular book one in the Wanderings and Sojourns series, “On Five Continents and Three Oceans.” Both books comprise collections of true short stories from his extensive and often wayward travels coupled with selected poems often inspired by rather unusual experiences and the somewhat unique life-vision he has developed as a result.

The second is one of the poems which relates to aspects of that life-vision which will hopefully get the listener to at least think about its message, although I do not necessarily ask that they agree.

“JUzDIzRTS is a terrific concept providing up and coming local authors a venue for reaching segments of their market they otherwise may not have the opportunity to touch.  It ties in well with the “book room” concept of the coffee house forming a natural bridge between readers and writers allowing them to interface and learn each other’s’ perspectives.   Not just a means for authors to promote their work, the setting and schedule encourages the artists and the audience to converse with and inspire each other in a two way energy flow that is often lacking at other reading venues.  As a writer I am very grateful to the organizers for this interesting experiment and plan to support its continuance in any way I can.” – Jim Scott

Public Speaking Jitters

I’m a Writer not a Performer…

Recently, an interesting point was inadvertently raised at the public writers meeting I attend – as an author, it’s difficult to sell your work by giving a reading if you have difficulty connecting with your audience.  I mean, writing is often a solitary affair and the prospect of public speaking does not always sit well when your craft is in the developing of story and not necessarily the oral telling of it.

Don’t be Afraid

If you consider yourself a writer first and a speaker never, you can still be apart of the JUzDIzRTS Author Event and use this community building tool to your advantage.  I just so happen to be a teacher of both English & Drama and Reader’s Theatre is one of my specialities.

Let me read for you.

If you would rather sit serenely by, close to but not in, the spotlight as your coveted work is shared aloud with potential new fans, by all means don’t give up the thought of participating in this event – let me help.

An Engaging Read

By incorporating a modicum of vocal inflection at just the right moment, a guest listening to an author’s work is more easily swept up, and maybe even swept away, by the words and the story.  You have 10 min. to draw in your audience and show them the wonder of your work.  Make it the best 10 min. you can offer.

Trust & Reliability

“Okay,” you say.  “That’s all well and good, but I don’t know you from Jack.”  OR you may be thinking, “Sounds good in theory, but my protagonist is male and I don’t think a woman’s voice could pull off the grit I need.”

Both are very valid points.

That being said, if you have a friend or colleague who is interested in reading on your behalf that works too!  The main idea that I want any tentative author to come away with here, is that you don’t need to miss out on this great opportunity just because you’re shy, have a monotone reading voice, or have difficulty reading in front of an audience.

You deserve your “Just Deserts” as much as the next author.
